Metal Cost Savings / Valve Industry
Background
During a meeting to review parts produced by competitors,
the Lofthouse sales and marketing group identified a component it
felt could be produced differently in a hot brass press. The process
required coring from six sides, but success in producing it would
result in material savings which in turn, would reduce component
cost.
Challenge
Lofthouse approached the prospects and provided them with samples
of highly cored forgings, offering evidence of the company’s
capabilities.
Solution
The new method introduced by Lofthouse resulted in a reduction
in raw material cost by $1.24 per piece. By utilizing a forging
press that was fed automatically by an induction billet furnace,
the labour component was also reduced by a further 15%.
The new component could be machined in one chucking on a CNC Rotary
Transfer Machine, eliminating the need for multiple set-ups in several
less-capable machines, noticeably improving its quality.
